On this week’s episode of The Legal Lens podcast, I am joined by leading civil rights attorneys and policy leaders, Stephen King, the 50th President of the California Association of Black Lawyers (CABL), and Attorney Carmen‑Nicole Cox, CABL board member, and the organization’s 2026 Lawyer of the Year.
Stephen’s path includes work as a public defender and civil‑rights advocate, informed in part by his experience leaving Liberia during a period of political upheaval and building a career focused on freedom, safety, and representing individuals who often have limited access to legal resources.
Carmen‑Nicole’s journey to the law was shaped by her view of legal training as a “new language” for helping her community, as well as by personal experiences, including the loss of her father in federal custody shortly before his scheduled release, which inform her emphasis on health, wealth, and prosperity in her advocacy.

Callais decision and related developments, including partnering with other legal organizations, monitoring proposed changes that could affect voting‑rights protections, and providing education so voters understand what is at stake.
